How to Delete Your ChatGPT History (And What Actually Gets Deleted)

Step-by-step guide to deleting your ChatGPT conversation history — what gets deleted, what doesn't, and what to do before you delete.

Most people assume that deleting a ChatGPT conversation makes it disappear everywhere. It doesn't. Deleting your ChatGPT history and removing your data from OpenAI's systems are two different things, and the gap between them matters if you care about privacy.

Clearing a chat from your sidebar removes it from your account view. It does not necessarily erase it from OpenAI's backend immediately, and it has no effect on any data that has already been used to improve their models.

This post walks through exactly how to delete your ChatGPT history — single conversations, all of it at once, and the chat history toggle — and explains what each option actually does. It also covers what to do before you delete, because once you confirm, the conversations are gone from ChatGPT for good.

How to Delete a Single ChatGPT Conversation

If you only want to remove a specific chat, the process takes a few seconds:

  1. Go to chat.openai.com and sign in
  2. Find the conversation in the left sidebar
  3. Hover over it and click the three-dot menu (...)
  4. Select Delete
  5. Confirm the deletion in the prompt

The conversation disappears from your sidebar straight away. You won't be able to recover it from inside ChatGPT.

What this does not do: it does not purge the conversation from OpenAI's servers the instant you click delete, and it does not retroactively remove it from any training data it may have already contributed to. The chat is gone from your account view, but the data lifecycle continues on the backend for a defined retention window (covered below).

This is the cleanest option if you just want to tidy your sidebar or remove one or two sensitive chats. For anything more sweeping, use the bulk delete option.

How to Delete All ChatGPT History at Once

To wipe every conversation in your account in one go:

  1. Click your profile icon (top-right) → Settings
  2. Go to Data Controls
  3. Click Delete all chats
  4. Confirm the action

That's it. Every conversation in your account view is removed in one action.

This is irreversible. Once you confirm, you cannot recover deleted conversations from inside ChatGPT — there is no trash folder, no undo, no recovery flow. If you have research, code, drafts, or anything else worth keeping, export first (see below).

If you want to stop new conversations being saved without deleting your existing history, there is a separate option: turning off chat history. That keeps everything you've already saved but treats future chats as temporary. Useful if you want to draw a line under the past without losing it. We cover that further down.

Does Deleting ChatGPT History Delete Your Training Data?

This is the part most people get wrong, so it's worth being precise.

No — deleting conversations from your account does not remove data that has already been used to train OpenAI's models. If your chats were used for model training before you deleted them, that cannot be reversed. The training process incorporates data into model weights; there is no extraction step.

What actually happens when you delete:

  • The conversation is removed from your account view immediately
  • OpenAI retains a copy for up to 30 days for safety and abuse monitoring purposes, per their stated policy
  • After that retention window, the data is removed from active systems
  • Backups may retain data for longer under OpenAI's broader retention policy

Deleting history and opting out of training are two independent settings. Toggling one does not affect the other.

To prevent future conversations being used for training, you need to do this separately:

  1. Settings → Data Controls
  2. Toggle off Improve the model for everyone

That stops new conversations being added to the training pool. It does not retroactively remove what's already been used.

What Happens to Your Data After You Delete It?

Here's the factual breakdown of what happens after you click delete:

  • Deleted conversations are removed from your account immediately
  • OpenAI retains copies for up to 30 days for safety and abuse review
  • After 30 days, data is removed from active systems
  • System backups may hold copies for longer in line with OpenAI's broader retention policy
  • ChatGPT Team and Enterprise accounts have separate, stricter data retention controls — usually shorter windows and no training use by default
  • Under GDPR (UK/EU) and CCPA (California), personal data must not be retained beyond stated periods without a lawful basis

In short: deletion is not instant erasure. It triggers a 30-day window during which the data still exists on OpenAI's side, even though you can no longer see it. After that, it moves out of active systems. None of this affects training data already incorporated into the model.

This isn't unusual for cloud services — most platforms work this way — but it's worth knowing if you're deleting for privacy reasons.

What to Do Before You Delete Your ChatGPT History

Deletion is permanent inside ChatGPT. Before you wipe everything, ask yourself whether any of those conversations are worth keeping. Research threads, working code, creative drafts, learning notes, debugging walkthroughs — once they're gone from ChatGPT, they're gone.

The smarter sequence is:

  1. Export your ChatGPT data first — Settings → Data Controls → Export data. OpenAI emails you a download link within a few minutes to a few hours.
  2. Download the ZIP — it contains a conversations.json file with every chat in your account, plus account metadata.
  3. Import into AI Chat Importer — the raw JSON file is unreadable on its own. AI Chat Importer turns the export into a fully searchable local archive with proper conversation views, dates, and full-text search.
  4. Then delete from ChatGPT — once you have a local copy, you can clear your history knowing nothing important is lost.

AI Chat Importer is built for exactly this: it lets you import your ChatGPT export and turn it into a searchable local archive that lives on your own device. No account, no cloud, no upload. You delete from ChatGPT, you keep everything that matters.

Download AI Chat Importer for Windows or Linux — £29 one-time, unlimited storage, Smart Import, folder organisation, and full-text search.

Or try the free web app — runs in your browser, no sign-up, no install. Good for trying the workflow before committing.

How to Turn Off ChatGPT History Without Deleting It

If you want a clean slate going forward but don't want to lose what's already there, you can disable history without deleting:

  1. Settings → Data Controls
  2. Toggle off Improve the model for everyone (separate from history — opts you out of training)
  3. To make new chats temporary, use Temporary Chat mode (the chat icon at the top of a new conversation) or toggle off chat history if available in your region

In Temporary Chat mode, conversations are not saved to your history sidebar and are not used to train models. They are retained briefly for safety review (around 30 days) and then removed. Useful for one-off sensitive questions you don't want appearing in your history.

Toggling off chat history broadly means new chats won't be saved at all. Your existing history stays untouched. This is the right option if you want to keep your archive but stop adding to it.

FAQ

How do I delete my ChatGPT history?

To delete a single chat: hover over it in the sidebar, click the three-dot menu, select Delete, and confirm. To delete everything at once: go to Settings → Data Controls → Delete all chats, and confirm. Both actions are irreversible inside ChatGPT.

Does deleting ChatGPT conversations delete training data?

No. Deleting a conversation removes it from your account but does not remove any data that was already used to train OpenAI's models. To prevent future conversations being used for training, you have to opt out separately via Settings → Data Controls → Improve the model for everyone.

Can I recover deleted ChatGPT conversations?

No. ChatGPT has no recovery flow, trash folder, or undo for deleted conversations. Once you confirm deletion, the chat is gone from your account. The only way to keep a copy is to export your data before deleting.

How do I delete all my ChatGPT chats at once?

Go to your profile icon → Settings → Data Controls → Delete all chats, then confirm. Every conversation in your account is removed in one action. There is no way to undo this, so export your data first if you want a copy.

What is the difference between deleting history and opting out of training?

Deleting history removes conversations from your account view. Opting out of training stops future conversations being used to improve OpenAI's models. They are independent settings — turning one on or off does not affect the other. To do both, you need to delete your chats and toggle off "Improve the model for everyone" in Data Controls.

Bottom Line

Deleting your ChatGPT history clears your account but does not undo past data use. The safest approach is to export your data first, opt out of training separately, and keep a local archive so you are never dependent on ChatGPT's cloud to access your own conversation history. Delete with confidence once you have a copy you control.
