Does AI Chat Importer upload my conversations to a server?
No. All processing happens entirely on your device — in your browser for the web app, or on your filesystem for the desktop app. Your conversation data is never transmitted to any external server. You can verify this yourself by opening DevTools in your browser, going to the Network tab, and importing a file — you will see zero conversation data sent anywhere.
What data does AI Chat Importer collect?
The web app collects no data at all — there is no analytics, no tracking, and no backend that receives your conversations. The desktop app only contacts our servers to verify your license key on activation — it sends only your license key and a machine fingerprint, never any conversation content.
Where is my data stored?
In the web app, your archive is stored locally in your browser using IndexedDB. In the desktop app, conversations are stored as individual JSON files on your filesystem in your system's application data folder. Nothing is stored in the cloud.
What happens to my data if I stop using the app?
Your data stays exactly where it is — on your device. You can export your full archive at any time. If you clear your browser storage, your web app archive will be removed, but you can always re-import from your original export file. Desktop app data persists independently of the app itself.

Which AI platforms are supported?
AI Chat Importer currently supports ChatGPT, Claude, and DeepSeek exports. Gemini and Grok support are on the roadmap.
How do I export my ChatGPT conversations?
Go to ChatGPT Settings → Data Controls → Export Data. You will receive a ZIP file by email within minutes. Import that file directly into AI Chat Importer. See our full guide: How to export ChatGPT conversations.
How do I export my Claude conversations?
You can export your Claude conversations from your account settings. See our full guide: How to export Claude conversations.
How do I export my DeepSeek conversations?
DeepSeek provides a conversation export from your account settings. See our full guide: How to export DeepSeek conversations.
Will my archive break if ChatGPT changes their export format?
We actively maintain compatibility with all supported export formats and ship updates whenever a platform changes their data structure. Your existing imported archive is never affected by format changes.
Web App
Is the web app free?
Yes. The web app is completely free with no account required. Open it at app.ai-chat-importer.com and start importing immediately.
Does the web app work offline?
Yes. Once the app is loaded in your browser, all features work without an internet connection. Your archive is stored in your browser's IndexedDB storage.
Is there a limit to how many conversations I can store in the web app?
The web app uses your browser's IndexedDB storage, which is limited by your browser and device. For very large archives (thousands of conversations), the desktop app is recommended as it uses your filesystem with no storage limits.
Which browsers are supported?
AI Chat Importer works in all modern browsers — Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. Chrome or Edge are recommended for the best performance with large archives.
Desktop App
How much does the desktop app cost?
The Windows desktop app is a one-time payment of £29. No subscription, no recurring fees — you pay once and own it permanently.
Is it available for Mac or Linux?
Currently the desktop app is available for Windows only. macOS support is coming soon. Linux support is on the roadmap.
What is Smart Import?
Smart Import analyses every conversation in your import file before writing anything to disk. It detects new conversations, updated conversations (where a newer version exists), and duplicates. You see a summary and choose how to handle updates — nothing gets overwritten without your confirmation.
What is Auto-Sort with AI?
Auto-Sort uses a local AI model (via Ollama) to automatically classify your conversations into folders. It analyses your conversation content, suggests a folder taxonomy, and lets you review and edit the suggestions before anything is applied. The entire process runs locally on your machine — no conversation data is sent to any external AI service.
Do I need an internet connection to use Auto-Sort?
Auto-Sort requires Ollama to be running locally on your machine or network. Ollama itself runs entirely offline — it does not send your data to any external service. Once Ollama is set up, Auto-Sort works with no internet connection required.
Can I use the desktop app on more than one computer?
Each license covers one machine at a time. If you get a new computer, you can deactivate your license on the old machine from within the app settings and activate it on the new one.
Where is my license key sent after purchase?
Your license key is emailed to you automatically after your payment is processed. Check your inbox for an email containing your ACIM-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX key. If you don't see it within a few minutes, check your spam or junk folder.
How do I download the desktop app?
After purchasing, visit the download page for the Windows installer download link.

How is this different from just keeping my ChatGPT export ZIP?
The ChatGPT export is a raw JSON file that requires a developer to read. AI Chat Importer gives you full-text search across every message, date filtering, a clean readable interface, and conversation organisation — all running locally without sending anything to a server.
Is there a mobile app?
Not yet. A mobile app is on the roadmap. You can join the wishlist on the pricing page to be notified when it launches.
