Which AI Platforms Support Conversation Export? (2026 Guide)

A complete comparison of which AI platforms let you export your conversation history — ChatGPT, Claude, DeepSeek, Grok, Gemini, Copilot, and more.

If you want to back up your AI conversation history, the first question is whether your platform actually lets you export it. The answer varies significantly depending on which AI tool you use.

This guide covers every major AI platform, what their export options look like, and what format you get — so you can make an informed decision about your data.

The Short Answer

Platform Export Available Format Usable for Backup
ChatGPT ✅ Yes ZIP (JSON + HTML) Yes
Claude ✅ Yes JSON Yes
DeepSeek ✅ Yes JSON Yes
Grok ✅ Yes JSON Yes
Gemini ❌ No No
Microsoft Copilot ❌ No No
Perplexity ❌ No No
Meta AI ❌ No No

ChatGPT (OpenAI)

Export available: Yes

ChatGPT offers the most mature conversation export of any major AI platform. Go to Settings → Data Controls → Export Data and OpenAI will email you a download link within minutes.

The export is a ZIP archive containing:

  • conversations.json — your full conversation history as structured JSON
  • HTML files for individual conversations — human-readable versions
  • Account metadata files

The JSON structure is well-documented and consistent. Each conversation has a unique ID, title, creation timestamp, and an array of message nodes with role, content, and timestamp fields.

Verdict: Excellent. The gold standard for AI conversation export.

Claude (Anthropic)

Export available: Yes

Claude's export is available from Settings → Privacy → Export Data. You receive a JSON file containing your full conversation history.

The format is clean and straightforward — an array of conversations, each with messages, roles, and timestamps. Anthropic has maintained a consistent format across updates.

Verdict: Excellent. Reliable format, easy to use.

DeepSeek

Export available: Yes

DeepSeek offers conversation export from Settings → Privacy → Export Data. The export is a JSON file with a similar structure to Claude's — an array of conversation objects with nested message arrays.

One thing worth noting: DeepSeek is operated by a Chinese AI company. If your conversations contain sensitive business or research content, keeping your own local backup is particularly worthwhile.

Verdict: Good. Reliable format, straightforward export process.

For a full walkthrough see the DeepSeek export guide.

Grok (xAI)

Export available: Yes

Grok offers conversation export from Settings → Data → Export Data. Unlike the other platforms, Grok's export is a single .json file rather than a ZIP archive.

The format uses a conversations array with nested responses arrays for messages. Timestamps use MongoDB's extended JSON format — { "$date": { "$numberLong": "..." } } — which is unusual but consistent.

Grok's integration with X (Twitter) means your conversation data may be linked to your social media identity — worth being aware of if you use Grok through X rather than grok.com directly.

Verdict: Good. The format is slightly unusual but consistent and well-structured.

For a full walkthrough see the Grok export guide.

Gemini (Google)

Export available: No

This is the most significant gap in AI platform data portability. Google does not provide a conversation export for Gemini.

Google Takeout — Google's official data export tool — lists Gemini as an available service. But the Takeout export for Gemini contains only configuration metadata, not conversation content. Your actual chat history is not included.

The only individual export option is Share & Export → Export to Docs on a per-conversation basis, which creates a Google Doc. This is manual, one conversation at a time, and outputs to a document format rather than structured data.

Browser extensions exist that attempt to scrape Gemini conversations from the interface, but these are fragile — they break when Google updates Gemini's UI, and their output formats are not standardised.

Verdict: Not available. No reliable export path exists as of April 2026.

Microsoft Copilot

Export available: No

Microsoft Copilot does not offer a conversation export. Your conversation history is visible in the Copilot interface but cannot be downloaded in bulk.

Microsoft does offer general account data exports through their privacy dashboard at account.microsoft.com, but Copilot conversation content is not included in this export.

Verdict: Not available.

Perplexity

Export available: No

Perplexity does not offer a conversation export. Individual search threads can be shared via link, but there is no way to download your full conversation history as a file.

Verdict: Not available.

Meta AI

Export available: No

Meta AI does not offer a dedicated conversation export. Meta's general data download tool covers Facebook and Instagram data but does not include Meta AI conversation history.

Verdict: Not available.

Why Does This Matter?

Your AI conversation history is increasingly valuable. Research threads, coding sessions, writing drafts, planning discussions — these accumulate into a body of work that is worth preserving.

The platforms that offer export give you a meaningful guarantee: even if your account is closed, the platform shuts down, or policies change, you have a copy of your data. The platforms that don't offer export leave you entirely dependent on their continued goodwill and availability.

Data portability is also a legal right in many jurisdictions. GDPR in Europe requires that users be able to export their personal data in a machine-readable format. The fact that Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity, and Meta AI do not offer conversation exports is a genuine compliance question — one that may force changes in the future.

How to Back Up the Platforms That Do Support Export

For ChatGPT, Claude, DeepSeek, and Grok — all four of which offer structured JSON exports — you can import your conversation history into AI Chat Importer for a private, searchable local archive.

Everything runs locally on your device. Your conversation content is never uploaded to any server. All four platforms are searchable together from a single interface.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which AI platform has the best export?

ChatGPT's export is the most mature — it includes both structured JSON and human-readable HTML, covers full conversation history, and has been consistently available for several years. Claude and DeepSeek are close behind with clean, well-structured JSON exports.

Will Gemini ever support conversation export?

Possibly. Data portability is increasingly expected from AI platforms and is a legal requirement under GDPR. Google may add proper Gemini export support in the future — either through Takeout or a dedicated export feature. We will add Gemini support to AI Chat Importer as soon as a reliable export format exists.

Can I export conversations from the ChatGPT mobile app?

The export is triggered from ChatGPT's web settings, not the mobile app. Go to chat.openai.com → Settings → Data Controls → Export Data. The resulting file contains all your conversations regardless of whether they were created on desktop or mobile.

How often should I export my AI conversations?

For most users, once a month is sufficient. If you use AI tools heavily for active work or research, weekly exports are more appropriate. The export process itself takes under a minute once you know the steps.

Summary

If you care about owning your AI conversation history, use platforms that offer export: ChatGPT, Claude, DeepSeek, and Grok all give you a structured JSON file you can download and archive.

If you use Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity, or Meta AI — your conversation history is currently locked in with no reliable export path. That is worth factoring into how you use those tools and what you discuss in them.

Export what you can. Archive it locally. Own your data.
