How to Import Your Grok Conversations

Grok stores your full conversation history — but like any AI platform, that history is only as safe as your account. This guide walks you through exporting your Grok conversations and importing them into AI Chat Importer for a private, searchable local backup.

Step 1

Export your conversations from Grok

  1. Go to grok.com and sign in.
  2. Click your profile icon in the top-right corner.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Under the Data section, click Export Data.
  5. Grok will prepare your export and send a download link to your registered email address — this may take a few minutes.
  6. Download the file from the email link.
What's in the export: The Grok export is a JSON file containing a conversations array. Each conversation has a title, timestamp, and a responsesarray containing the messages. The format is different from ChatGPT's ZIP export — it is a single .json file. AI Chat Importer handles this format automatically.
Step 2

Open AI Chat Importer

  1. Open the AI Chat Importer desktop app.
  2. Click Import in the sidebar.
  3. Select Grok as the source platform.
Step 3

Import the file

  1. Click Choose File and select the .json file you downloaded from Grok.
  2. AI Chat Importer will parse the file and load all your conversations.
  3. Once complete, your Grok conversations will appear in your archive alongside any ChatGPT, Claude, or DeepSeek conversations you have already imported.

Troubleshooting

“No conversations found” after importing

Make sure you selected the correct file — the Grok export is a single .json file, not a ZIP. If you downloaded a ZIP from your email, extract it first and look for the .json file inside.

Export email hasn't arrived

Check your spam or junk folder. Grok's export emails can sometimes be filtered. If it still hasn't arrived after 30 minutes, try requesting the export again from Settings → Data → Export Data.

Your Grok conversations are now archived

Once imported, your Grok conversations are fully searchable alongside all your other AI conversations — by keyword, date, folder, or platform. Everything stays on your device.
